可算名詞・不可算名詞の特徴

可算・不可算の判断がついたなら、あとは簡単。文中では次のように扱います。

1. 不可算の場合、複数形になったり a[an] が付いたりしない。
2. 「多い・少ない」のあらわし方が違う。
   many dogs / a few dogs
   much water / a little water
3. 単数の可算名詞は、裸（限定詞なし）で出てこない。
   dog ×
   a dog ○

 ①②は「数えられる・数えられない」ことから自動的に出てきます。不可算なら、数えられることを前提とする複数形や a[an]... の形はとれませんし、数えられることを前提とする many や one, two なんて単語は当然使えません。

■a lot of と lots of

どちらも「たくさんの」ですが、lots of は「くだけた感じ」のする表現。s が付いている分 lots には、強調も強く感じられます。

1. Does Roger have a lot of money?
   ロジャーはたくさんお金持ってる？
2. Are you kidding? He has lots of money!
   バカいっちゃいけないよ。すごく持ってる！

可算と不可算を文中で見分ける！

次の名詞を見てみましょう。可算名詞として使っているのか、それとも不可算名詞なのか、判断してみてください。

1. These picture frames are made of wood.
2. There is a lot of top-secret information in these documents.
3. There are too many mosquitoes around this evening.
4. Low-fat milk is better for you.
5. Do you have a pen on you?
6. This plant doesn't need much water.
7. Get me some olive oil, will you?
