レポート文（whether/if節・wh節での展開）

レポート文で使うことのできるのは、that節だけではありません。whether / if 節あるいは wh節でも展開することができます。

1.  I didn't know whether / if you had already paid the bill.
2. Clare asked me whether / if I have a key to the safe.
3. We haven't decided whether / if we'll go to Malaysia this summer.

作る要領は that節とまるで同じです。know の内容を whether / if 節で「後ろから説明」しているだけ。

whether, if は「～かどうか」。選択をあらわす語ですから「～かどうか（知らなかった）」となります。

■whether to ～

to 不定詞を使ったバリエーションもマスターしておきましょう。「～すべきかどうか」です。

• I don't know whether to attend the party.
  そのパーティーに参加するべきかどうかわからない。

1. I didn't know where I could get tickets for the concert.
2. Does anyone know when the baseball camp begins?
3. The teacher explained why bullying is bad.
4. I don't have a clue how they did it.

やはり作り方は同じ。wh節を使って「後ろから説明」。know の内容を where I could get tickets で展開する。ただそれだけですよ。

■the way（that）～

方法をあらわす how の代わりに the way（that）～という形も使われます。

• Nobody knows the way he did it. He's just a genius.

■wh語＋to

「wh語 + to」の形もポピュラーです。「いつ・どこで・何を～すべきか」など。

1. I'll tell you when to press the button. OK?
2. Help! I have no idea what to buy my girlfiriend for her birthday.
3. Excuse me. I'm not sure how to fill out this application form.

はい、これで whether / if 節・wh節も終了です。
