基本動詞｜RISE/FALL/TURN/PASS

RISE / 基本イメージ

「上」という方向は比喩による用法拡張の宝庫です。①上昇する、②増す、③社会的立場が上がる、④起きる、などなど。日本語とほとんど同じですよ。

1. Everyone knows hot air rises.
2. Food prices have risen dramatically.
3. What happened to him after he rose to fame?
4. I never rise before midday on weekends.

FALL / 基本イメージ

「下」方向の動きをあらわす代表的な動詞。やはり比喩的に幅広い意味が広がっています。①落ちる、②倒れる、③減る、④健康・意識の減退、などなど。

1. Be carefull or you'll fall!
2. I lost control and fell head first into the snow.
3. The number of students is falling every year.
4. He fell ill while we were on holiday.
5. He fell asleep on our first date!

TURN / 基本イメージ

クルッと向きを変える、がイメージ。

派生イメージ

• 【各種方向転換】

1. Turn left at the next corner.
2. Turn the steaks after about 3 minutes.
3. Turn the TV on _ the match is about to start.

Turn the TV on（テレビをつける）は、スイッチをひねる動作が想像されています。（今ではそんなテレビ見かけませんけどね...）

• 【変化】

1. I love it when the leaves turn golden yellow in the fall.

表と裏が違う色の紙を引っくり返してみましょう。ほら色が変わった。これが TURN が「変化」に使われる感触です。

PASS / 基本イメージ

ある場所をとおり過ぎる。

1. If you pass a big park, you've gone too far.
2. The days pass too quickly when you're on holiday.
3. Hey, I passed my driving test!

具体的な場所でも試験などの関門でも大丈夫。②は「自分の場所」を通り過ぎるということ。
